i thought about that as well...although after a ride like that climbing canyon vista seems for palatable than climbing Hopseed

Not sure if it matters much, but the chain on a SS is more direct, the chain on the squish is going though pulleys which in it comes to lifting things, it's always easier. Physics 101 :?:

i read you post that before and i cant figure out how the pulleys work to lighten the load if you will...i'll take your word on it Gene since it's the most plausible right now...i wanted to think it was me getting stronger ;)

You are getting stronger, but it's just simple physics that pulleys assist in tranferring "force" I just figured it eases in pedaling as well. Only way to tell is to put it in the same gear and ride them both, one after the other. Also, remember, the SS gearing is more "direct".

yah that's what i've been doing when i ride the squish...keeping it in the same gearing. but i do see what you're saying though bout easying the pedal force.

Also, you've learned to ride a different way. Like Jeff said, you learned to attack the climbs because you know that's what you have to do. Also, another thing you'll notice is the lines you pick because you don't have the squish. SS/HT will make you better at climbing and descending. Just watch out that you don't go too hard too quick. I had to ease off because my knees were getting worked. Not only from SSing, but riding the "big ring" on climbs like Black Star, Cholla, Mathis and Meadows. I'm thinking of gearing down to a 34:19 instead of the 34:18 now on it.

thanks; i'm very conscious of my knees as it is my weak link so i try not to push it too hard...but i must say it's a lot easier for me now to get up out of my saddle than it did before. Slow steady progress i guess.

Today was prob the most distance I have put on the SS so far. Pretty happy with the ride and how I did. I think Matt and I did around 19 miles today total. Definitely agree with Gene I am already attacking hills more because I know that I need to work harder to get up them.

wanted to bump this thread because i finally got to my 29'er around the block today and noticed what some called SLOW steering. I agree that this is attributed to the big wheel and the gyroscopic affect of the wheel spinning it seems to take a bit more effort to initiate the turn.

But dam what people say about rolling over things HOLY CRAP it rolls...the bike just totally feels better compared to my 26'er SS it's hard to explain but it feels more comfy...I want to say it feels like riding a beach cruiser.

it'll be interesting to get a feel for this sucker out on the trail...once i get over this cold :(

Pound some Nyquil tonight and come ride. We can put some miles on that new bike. I have a 90mm 10degree stem on mine right now and it feels nice. I had a 110 but felt a bit stretched out. The big wheels took me a few miles to get used to but quickly felt great on the dirt.
