Often thought putting water tank with a sprinkler system in my Bob Trailer. I think I could get ten gallons up there and go downhill slow. I have hauled 45lb uphill bike packing.
the pictures at the start of this thread, taken almost a year ago...look almost lush compared to now. and we thought it was dry then.
We do need rain, but honestly, I am shocked at how well all of those berms have held up. Only one turn has horrible braking bumps in the approach (a right hander about 1/3rd of the way down). The second berm from the top is starting to chip away with the cracking earth. All in all, I think Meadows is riding great right now, especially given the lack of moisture. Now 5-Oaks - that's beat up!!!!
Bumpety bump. It rained. I'm going to check on Meadows tomorrow, December 5th. If there's enough moisture after today's sunny day (spent working on the Luge), I'll be digging. Anyone who'd like to help can email me tonight or before eight in the morning at <[email protected]>. I plan to be in the Ranger Station parking lot by 9:00am, then drive to the base of the trail. We have permission to work whether the park is open or closed.
Thank you! Unfortunately, only two people answered my request for volunteers. We met with Ranger Zach and decided to work about 200 feet of trail near the very bottom of the descent. We turned a long, left-hand turn into a sweeping berm, fixed a straightaway, and rebuilt a quick right-hand berm. It should be fun. I want to get back out there and work the rest of the trail. Hopefully we'll have another storm soon, and I'll put something together for a Saturday or Sunday. That'll allow more of you to help out. Anyone interested should get on my email list, <[email protected]>, as that streamlines my prep time. I'd much rather swing a pick than sit in front of my computer. Hope to see you in the coming weeks, Jim
We've got a new storm forecast for Friday, and I'm hoping we can get a good-sized group to go in and make substantial progress on Saturday morning, December 13th. It'd be great to add and improve berms in the middle and upper parts of the trail. I'd also like to see improved drainage from top to bottom to prevent rutting and preserve the trail. We have permission to work in the park whether it's open or closed, which allows us to work with damp soil before everything has a chance to dry out. Please email me at <[email protected]> so I'll know how many volunteers to plan for, and can make arrangements for tools, etc. I'll send more details by the end of the week.. and I hope to see you on Saturday! Thank you, Jim
In...lets get a couple of crews out there to give the trail enough love to allow it to be worked through the winter...It won't be workable forever.
Are you implying that trail work's a spectator sport? I'm flattered, I think. But before you haul that 12 pack and folding chair up the trail, keep in mind we'll be sweaty, covered in mud, and.. oh, yeah, I forgot. We're talking about Rox here. Hey Rox, swing by if you're in the neighborhood. Help us build a berm and I'll buy you a beer. Here's the plan for Meadows trail work tomorrow: Meet at 9:00am at Moulton Meadows park. This park is near the top of Meadows trail, accessed by driving up Nye's Place from PCH in Laguna. Nye's Place turns into Balboa Avenue and we'll park in the vicinity of Capistrano Avenue. We currently have a group of 4 or 5 volunteers, including myself, and could certainly use more. Please join us if you're able, to help make progress on this trail. Volunteers should bring good hiking shoes, work gloves, snacks, beverages, and rain gear. We'll work for about 4 hours. As always, an email RSVP will allow me to plan for sufficient tools. Thank you, Jim Jennings 949-456-2242 PS: Please look for an update in the morning, in case it hasn't stopped raining. Otherwise, I hope to see you there!
I cleaned and repaired the water bars on the local trail last night. When I got done it started to rain. Perfect timing
It's definitely sexy watching men work, Jim!!! I was down earlier this week; I just don't have it in me to drive to OC again or I'd be there, you know that, right?? There will be plenty more storms and weekends to help - I'm all about giving back!!
