I wouldn't recommend Racing Ralphs or Rocket Rons if the Hans Dampf isn't enough grip - you'd be making things worse. And unfortunately according to Schwalbe's web site the Dirty Dan only comes in 26" size. I haven't ridden on them, but Maxxis makes a 29x2.5 Minion DHF and a High Roller II in 29x2.3.
I crashed and a concussion last October, and lost my memory of the crash. It was at Marshall Canyon and from my front tire washing out. And probably like your crash, it was the last place I'd ever expect to crash, let alone get a concussion. And the conditions are not anywhere nearly as technical as Five Oaks. My lesson from that crash is to never take any trail for granted, no matter my experience level or number of times I've ridden it safely in the past. Peace! Glad you're okay.
If this were true, you would need 4" lugs to get through SoCal powder. It's not a matter of Hans Dampfs, Fat Alberts or Minions - every good tire will wash out, especially in 4-6" of fluff. I am sure Garrett has good tires on the front of his rig. He just washed out. It happens to everybody who rides aggressively in soft conditions. I hope you're back on the bike, G!
Thank you everyone for the healing vibes. I am still feeling some effects of the concussion but thankfully they are diminishing every day. I'm back to driving, working, and going to school, but still no riding unfortunately - due to the risk of a repeat concussion I have to stay off the bike for another 2-3 weeks, and even then it will be the road bike. No real mountain stuff for another couple weeks after that. And today I started the process of getting my teeth fixed which is a whole 'nother adventure. One root canal down - one extraction, a bridge, and a splint to go. Chris, you're always the voice of reason. I'm running a 2.35 Kenda Excavator up front and a 2.0 Michelin Grip'r in the rear. Neither one has given me a single problem, in fact I was really digging the combo with my new wheelset (ZTR Flow EX). I doubt it would have mattered if I was running Hans Dampfs, Minions, Small block Eights, tubes, 29'er, 650b, etc. Stuff like this just happens.
