Wait for sentencing, that's up to the judge.

Not that surprising as the incriminating evidence was hardly circumstantial.

In agreement with jcka - hope he gets locked up for a while. Sounds like the jury didn't take too long to deliberate considering there were several charges considered. Kudos to the prosecutor.

    That's awesome!!!!

But only UP TO 5 years? [-( I think he should have gotten more considering his motive.

I just hope he doesn't come out of prison bitter...

Finally, the fantastic news that we'd all been waiting for as we followed this case! I hope this helps to set a precedent for even stronger protection of cyclists' rights.

It's great to see that our jury system actually worked this time!

I hope the nightly news covers this. It could be huge for motorists recognizing there are consequences.

As an employee of the federal court, I just want all of you to remember this next time you get a jury notice. Yeah, it sucks, but sometimes people don't realize how vital it is until something really important to you is in the hands of 12 strangers.

Honestly, I wish it was required by law for business to give their employees unlimited jury time w/o consequence. I've always thought it was ridiculous that we have something we are forced to do by our government, but our employers can dock our pay or force us to take our own annual leave if we are gone on jury duty too long. I am fortunate that the court doesn't see it that way, for obvious reasons, and if I am called for jury duty, I have as long as necessary. That is how I think it should be for *everyone*.

Okay, getting off my soapbox ;)

:clap::clap::clap::clap: I hope the final sentencing gets a ton of publicity, as it might just persuade a few drivers out there to behave differently around cyclists they encounter on the road.

We all hope he gets the maximum penalty, but if he doesn't, we can be pretty confident that his career in medicine is in serious jeopardy. Unlikely his hospital (Beverly Hospital in Montebello) will support him with a criminal conviction. Any other hospital he may apply to, once his sentence is served, will look at his record. If there are any avid cyclists on the Credentials Committee (which approves hospital privileges for staff physicians) they will never let him on staff.

Finally, I can't imagine he will get medical malpractice insurance, he can't be impartial in treating cyclists injured in accidents. So, the trouble is just beginning for the future career of Dr. Christopher Thompson. Check in with the Medical Board of California in a month or two to see if his license has been revoked.

I doubt this jerk will get much more then a slap on the wrist. Remember he's a doctor and the courts typically go easier on professional people. Still it makes my day. I bet he'll be out in a day or two as his attorney will no doubt file an appeal. And now the money will start to fly out. Lawyers can be predatory and when some one is fighting for their freedom they are more prone to spend as much as possible if it means staying out of jail. He might even have to change his Brentwood address

I was encouraged by the fact that he was immediately taken into custody as the judge considered him a flight risk.

he's going to have to do some jail time. i heard about this on the john & ken show on the radio, and a bunch of people were calling in. it's incredible how much hatred people have towards bikers. several people called in and stated that they wished they could run bikers off the road or take a fire extinguisher to them. the characterized bikers as a bunch of self righteous environmentalists. i wonder why so many people have such anger towards such a harmless group of people :?:

    Jail or Prison?

Which one is this guy going to? If it's 5 years in prison, it makes the sentence a little more palatable. Will he be able to practice when he gets out?

Even in Canada, that liberal, pot-smoking, commie loving, socialized nation to the north, with fantastic mountain biking, it would be tough to get a provincial medical license with that conviction on a physician`s record. And if the province granted a license, depending on which province (left leaning, like British Columbia, or more right leaning like Alberta), the public outcry may be too heavy for any hospital to hire such a low-life. He`s an ER doctor, he needs an ER to work in. California may be looser with granting licenses, but people could harass any hospital board who hired him.
