When my Air9 was originally stolen the theives lowered the hell out of the saddle and scratched up the seatpost in the process. Since then I've always had an eye on it but the majority of the damage was below the seatpost clamp itself and out of view, except maybe 1-2" which weren't all that bad compared to what was hidden in the seattube.

Now that this seatpost has switched frames, more importantly to one where pretty much all of the seattube is exposed, i'm starting to get weary how much I trust this post on a 6" bike. Pic for reference of how much sticks out.

I'm 25mm away from the "maximum" line on the post.

The 1st and 3rd pic show the area that worries me the most and is actually flaking a couple levels worth. This flaking/most damaged area is where it is clamped on my Air9, for this reason it had to be swapped out as it was causing further flaking.

On my Slopestyle, the clamp is just a tad less than a third way up in that last pic. See first linked pic, nearly all the seatpost available is being used.

So besides being visually annoying, and the fact it's soon to be replaced by an adjustable seatpost, I have 3 options.

1.) leave it on either bike
2.) it makes it way to the spare parts bin
3.) sell/ebay it to someone on a frame that doesn't require much seatpost ala small frame or DH'er

Cliff notes: the clamp is in the worst affected area on my Niner, and is nearly at the bottom on my Slopestyle. Neither option has me feeling confident in it.

This might just be something that needs to be seen in person as the camera lies!

Its the nano carbon that Easton produce. Looks fine to me. I crashed a pair of easton ec90 bars into a tree so hard it bent my fox steerer and ripped out the CK headset. Easton had the bars back and they were perfecto on the test bench. Those scratches dont look like much - having said that if i have a carbon post I dont raise it up and down alot.

    two options:

send the picture to easton and ask them. if they say it's good, it's on them if it breaks.

make a nice christmas tree ornament out of it and buy another thompson, and never worry about this silliness again.

i'd take a bit of 1K grit wet/dry and feather the flaky edges... but otherwise, looks good enough to me!

With all the chips, you can see the various levels of whatever they use. In person you can really tell what the outer coating is which doesn't bother me aside from how it looks, but there are a couple spots where its quite a few levels down that it is starting to get damaged.

Just the thought of me riding hard all day, then cruising back to the truck relaxed and all of a sudden...... OH SHNAP!! Before you figure out what the hell that noise was your sack is getting sucked into your seat stay and rear tire.. Yea thats gonna laeve a (skid) mark!!

How much is it worth to you to keep your sack out of your rear tire? Thats my question to you. I would get a new post. But thats just me. I like my sack.

Thanks for the visual, Hugh.

It's getting replaced soon, just wondering what to do with it afterwards.

Wait - I mean that about my own sack. I'm sure Hugh has a fine sack, but I have no particular like or dislike for it.

Now that that's cleared up, I just bought an EC-70 carbon post from Jenson. Depending on the size you need, they have them on sale for $52-$69, 47% off the $130 msrp. Well worth it for the sense of sack security, IMHO.

Feel free to throw it this way if you want to get rid of it. I'll promise to juice whatever is left out of it. :)

Easton sprays their carbon posts with a clear coat. It looks like the clear coat was worn off.

One time I was building a bike, and didn't like the yellow/red Easton logo, so I stripped off the logo and clear coat with paint stripper, ,then resprayed the post with clear. Looked like new (even though it was already a new post).

i think it'll be fine. As long as it's not cracked anywhere it just looks cosmetic to me.
