And I don't think a rattler will "go after you" unless you threaten it somehow and really piss it off. They'll make a bunch of noise and coil up when threatened, but they know they're better off not biting you.

Year of the snake for me! Came across this lil' guy today trying to cross Hwy 38 in Mentone. I bounced my tire at him to get him to go back into the brush along the road. Hopefully this suicidal episode is over and he can live a long life of catching nasty mice!

Was heading west back along Bommer Ridge in LCWP this afternoon, just before Red tail trail and I was literally 2 maybe 3 steps away from treading on this guy -

It can be hard to judge length, without being prone to exaggeration, but I thought this guy was at least 4 feet, my wife thought at least 5.

As we walked past Red Tail/gate 8 and began walking up the hill, this guy was literally hanging out...

He was definitely at least 5 foot, he was massive. A little crowd began together as we took photos, a family, 3 riders and another walker...
The snake didn't seem that bothered and just meandered off...

    snnnnaakkeeee!

Chatted with a guy at the bottom of the fireroad leading up to worsham cyn yesterday. When i got to the top of the hill I saw this rattler and proceeded to take a few pics. Then as the guy I had just chatted with approached I said "Hey check out that snake", no response. The guy continues to ride straight towards the rattler. I yell "hey... SNAKE!", again, no response. Finally I yell "Hey! ...SSNAKE!.. RATTLESNAKE IN FRONT OF YOU!" The guy looks up and turns to avoid the snake. When he finally turned away, he was literally 3 ft away! The rattler had started to bunch up and lifted up his head when the guy got close.

So the guy stops, takes his earphones off and says "I probably shouldn't ride with these, I probably should watch where I'm going" ....aah yeah!

I can't tell exactly how big the rattler was, but he was over 3 feet long.

I used to ride solo with the iPod all the time and then after a couple of close calls (with rattlers) in El Moro and LCWP, I've opted not to bring the iPod.. I wanna be able to hear everything

Found this when dogs barking crazy. I think a Cal King? Didn't look toxic so I put it into the open space behind my house. Made my wife take the pic.

Riding in the Sierra Pelonas this morning and saw these two critters. They were kind enough to pose for me:

This racer was a bit over 4' long and slithered up to me to say hello, Saw him on Martingdale Rd. on the way toward Ana Verde Mtwy
    [IMG]

This guy was sunning on the road (Ana Verde Mtwy) and decided to get out of my way - here he is just chillin on the embankment waiting for me to go away. A little less than 4'

usually the racers will turn and haul arse away but this guy slowly squirmed his way up to me like he wanted me to pet him or something. I saw a couple very large (about 2' long) alligator lizards up there but they were gone before I could snap a photo.

Another one in a surprising place

Last Thursday I rode Telegraph in CHSP. We usually take a break at the picnic table under the trees about a mile West of Four Corners. When we put our bikes against the tree, we didn't notice the little rattler that had curled up in the depression in the tree. A couple of other riders pointed it out. The photo makes it easier to see than it really was. IMG_0235 (800x600).jpg

^ This is what I picture when I picture a rattle snake. Yet the more common that I have seen is black and tan variety. Anyone have any knowledge on that?

    2013-07-22 16.54.11 copy.jpg

We looked at each other for a minute or two while I tried to get a decent pic on my crappy old iPhone...
Then he stuck his tongue out at me and disappeared...

I assume you are talking about the snake, because that creepy-faced guy hiding under the rock on the bottom left does not look pleased.
