Fenix LED Helmet Flashlight

I got one of these things for Christmas. I read about it several months ago on BikeForums.net. It is mounted to my helmet via double sided velcro. I used it tonight on a ride up and down Brown Mtn. WOW it was amazingly bright. Brighter than my MiNewt x2. For the price of these things you can get two for the price of the MiNewt, get the same burn time, carry extra cheap batteries, get the same or better brightness, and for about the same or less weight. Plus you have something you can use for something other than biking (not sure what there is to do other than biking but I'm sure a few of you might know of something).

Brian, how's the beam pattern? Wide enough to ride with? I always thought most flashlights were a straight narrow beam, not much flood.

 

My roadie co-worker uses his Fenix on his helmet for a spot (& backup) to his handlebar L&M Arc HID.

 

Hey, did I see you riding down from the parking lot around 5:30-6?

 

The beam is definitely not a wash beam and has a pronounced center beam with much lighter wash around that. Both had a strong edge. Because the light is pointing exactly where you want to see I found the light to be perfect, then again I have nothing to compare it to as this is the first time I've ridden with a helmet light and have never ridden with a HID light.

No we didn't leave the parking lot until 7:20 and finished about 8:45. Pretty slow I know. We stopped to switch bikes a few times and talk to someone for a while. Read: the ride was a tea party.

 

I have a P2D (single cell, older Cree). I've not tried it on the bike, but it gets quite HOT after about 10 minutes. Is the L2D any better? How would you mount it? I'd like to use it as a backup light possibly.

Great backpacking and camping light as well.

Super helpful! I'm not in the mood to build a full on MTB light (no offense to the folks that are such as BrewMaster) but I would prefer mounting it with no mods or perhaps wiring a larger battery pack to just the head of the flashlight and somehow get rid of the body.

 

i carry my Fenix P1D CE as a back up, double sided velcro can mount it easily as it is so small and lightweight.

The OP talks about how he mounted it to his helmet. I did something similar. Someone else on page 3 used another method to mount to the bars. Seems lighter than the one sold on the elighted sight.

Regarding the heat, I read somewhere that the manufacture stated that for use when biking the light will work fine. The light will be cooled by the moving air when biking. Last night I simply turned it off or down when stopped.

My SureFire flashlights are bright as hell. That velcro mount may be the perfect answer to my night riding woes

 

PSA: If you carry one of these expensive Fenix flashlights around in your pocket, for the love of all that is good in the world, make sure you clip or tether or otherwise secure it. If you don't, you'll be crying like me over losing it at the mall.

No idea where to get it locally. Though I have been very impressed with this light still.

 

Found this today after looking around on MTBR I like the setup with two of the Lockblocks $120.00 for a pair of the Fenix lights :-k

So what kind of burn time you getting and what batteries are you using?

 

I get about 2 hours and using Sanyon rechargeable batteries.

 

The flashlights keep evolving. I tried this one for the first time last night at the Loop.
MTE flashlight. Much cheaper that any bike light I could buy.
These aren't my pics but basically show my helmet set up. The third card in the second pic is about 100 feet away.
It states 900 lumens. Reality is more like 700 on high, about 300 on medium.
One battery was fine for the whole ride (turned off at the stops).
I didn't like the throwback from all the dust, and it was a little heavy for my head - it'll go on the bar next ride.
Other than that, it was great! It was awesome to do the Thursday ride again!

 

I just bought three of those MTE's... I mounted to my Xen using an innertube, works great. My bar mounts aren't here yet. (I was thinking how I don't notice the weight on my helmet)

It's a helluva deal... 3 flashlights (figure 700 lumens x 3)... 6 batteries and 2 chargers... that's a lot of runtime and a lot of light, for less than $200 delivered.
