During a thorough cleaning/maintenance, I noticed that my rear brake line has not only rubbed off the paint in that area but is also literally cutting in to my frame! There is a noticeable amount of material missing as I run my finger over the area. It's a 2008 Specialized Enduro. Has anyone had a similar experience with this?
I will be taking her to the shop to be checked but I'm nervous that Specialized will tell me to go kick rocks.

I wouldn't necessarily describe the cut as "deep" but it is definitely noticeable to the touch.

Would appreciate any feedback because I'm more than a little bothered by this. Seems like a definite design flaw.

    Reroute the line? Tape?

Annoying as hell I admit, but I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Ever thought of wrapping the (offending) spot with a used bicycle tube?:?:

Yep. They all do that - the 08 and up FSR frames. I had an 08 Stumpjumper exact same problem.

I ended up wrapping it w/ a strip of rubber (inner tube) to prevent further damage.

Here's what Specialized rep said about it "Cable rub and chain-slap are non-warranty damages" aka wear and tear.

Where ever the cables or housing hits the frame it will do that. You can buy frame saver stickers or do what I did. I've been using electrical tape to protect the spots on my frames for years. On a black frame electrical tape is virtually invisble.

SOAB! That's exactly what I did not want to hear and also exactly what I thought I would hear! I am done with Specialized!
If it were simply cosmetic I wouldn't care at all but there's aluminum missing. You would think that should be considered more serious than just "cable rub."

i had the same issue arise after riding my enduro with in two weeks of its purchase, not as bad as yours, it was just the paint being scratched from the cable rub so i just used the lizard skins frame patch kit before any more damage was done and so far its has been working great and holding up just fine.

It's already zip tied over the left seat-stay, and under the left chain-stay. The problem w/ the design is its pushing the cable/hydro line back and forth.

Routing it else where would be very ugly on that frame . All the cables route under the down-tube and BB.

I'll be patching it up with either electrical tape and/or a tube but I will not be buying anything else from these people. The more I learn about Specialized, the more I do not like them.

In a few years it will get sharp enough to cut that brake line. Until someone sustains a serious injury (due to loss of braking power), and sues the manufacturer, they wont do anything about it :-k.

Needless to say, I got rid of the frame ;).

This happened to me on my 2003 enduro and its a really easy, cheap, effective fix. Just get an old tube, wrap it around the area with the rub, then secure it with zip ties.

Not the prettiest fix in the world but it works.

I have an 08 Stumpy that looks exactly like that.....it sucks but all you can do is tape it and not worry to much. I'll ride mine one more year then dump the frame.

try black cloth handelbar tape. I used clear non slip tape on my heckler to stop chain and cable slap

Sorry to break it to you, but you can have problems with cable rub on almost any frame, and no manufacturer is going to warranty a frame for that. Its just one of those things you need to watch out for and take it upon yourself to put something between housing and frame to prevent it.

*disclaimer* this is not directed at anyone here.

If this was the case for your car/truck, and heard this response from the MFG, this would be a major class action lawsuit in the making.

On a commercial vehicle, this would be deemed "not road worthy" and not be allowed to go back on the road.

The opposite happened on my 5 spot, the 5 spot ate through the brake line. I put some black electrical tape around the brake line for a temporary solution and it seems to work so far.
