Using true UST tires and rims I've dropped 8' to flat on only 25psi (2.4" Specialized single ply tires) numerous times. No burps, no tires blowing off the rim and no pinch flats. I've finished numerous rides where I've pulled at least 5 thorns from each tire. All that happened was a momentary misting of Stan's fluid as it sealed the holes. $15 stem is a one time purchase. Same cannot be said for a $3 tube. I too can see the benefits. ;)

    Igonrance is bliss.

I've been running UST wheels and tires exclusively since 2007 and would never consider going back to tubes. Have you ever stopped to wonder why cars, motos, etc. went tubeless?? Hmmm..........?????

If your blowing tires of a Mavic 823, you should watch a video on how to install a tire.

Second thought.... were are you getting tubes for three bucks, I want to stock the shelf at the shop.

Been running UST rims and tires w/stans juice in it since '04,and never have had any of those problems such as burping, exploding off the rim, etc.,also no pinch flats and the ability to run tires at low pressure.I do carry a couple of tubes with me on rides, and in the last three years the only time I've taken them out of my pack was to give them to riders who still use tubes when they multi-flatted and used up all their spare tubes.Piranha, ingnorance isn't bliss...it's just ignorance.-Lloyd

I see a lot of discussion between tubes or no tubes, but I have not seen a reason to change from tubes. I have ran the same tubes for at least 2 years, plus green slime, rim tape, and a tire liner. My pressure ranges from 45-60psi depending on my laziness. Maybe oneof these days I'll switch to stan's or something else, but for now the pack of 10 tubes I bought back in 06 are still with me minus two.

You're doing the same thing as putting stans in the tire except it's in the tube, and they put much more slime in it which weighs alot, then stans.Add the weight of the tire, slime tube, and tire liner(mr.tuffy or spinskin) and your rolling mass is pretty hefty. With tubeless you also get a better rolling tire with less friction than if you have a tube in it whether it's a regular tube or a slime tube.-Lloyd

Yep I'm right there with ya. I've got tubeless rims but run tubes. Took a long time for me to have a flat and that was my fault as I over filled a low tube with CO2 and the gas later expanded then BOOM. If I were riding in the desert or areas with thorns I could then see the advantage potentially of tubeless but then again even tube riders have options.

Rather than derailing this thread, I'd suggest everyone do a search on the forums as this subject has been discussed ad nauseum already or start a new thread.

    noweyout,

Did you get your problem resolved?

Napoleon Dynamite: What kind of bike do you have?
    Pedro: It's a sledgehammer.
Napoleon Dynamite: Dang! You got shocks, pegs... lucky! You ever take it off any sweet jumps?
Napoleon Dynamite: [Cut to Pedro jumping] You got like three feet of air that time.

You just might want to consider the benefits of tubeless (unless you are riding something like this bike...)

I finally got to attack the problem and Yes, you guys are right, it was leaking air from the seal of the valve stem. I when to Jones' Cycles in San Marino and got my Mavic valve stems for $5 each. Didn't come with the extra bells and whistles that make the price sky rocket to $15 but I am glad. thank you for all you input. PATO, thanks for your offer and help on this matter. Always a great place to find help!!!

$5 for a UST stem? Sheesh, that would have prompted me go back to running tubes.

    NOT!!!

Seen the price of tubes latelty? The cost of tubes went up, therefore the price of tubes went up as well. Soon youll see that tubes are seven bucks for a basic standard tube.

Besides, five dollars for a Mavic stem is a good price

Price out a set of UST tires from Schwalbe, and a set of tubeless. I bet you can buy 3 or 4 tubes with the savings. I'm lucky to get 500, maybe 600 miles out of a Fat Albert, tubed, about 2 months of riding.

With tubes all I have to worry about is the tube leaking. With tubeless, I have everything else that needs to not leak, beads, spoke holes, rim tape, valve stem.

Funny, how something so simple as a tube, you never see posts or threads from people about trouble shooting why their tubes are leaking. And they don't need $15 pint bottle of Stan's, either, to add to the cost.

It's one thing when you race, to throw your money away for the racer's edge. Speed costs, how fast do you want to go? It's another to be economical and not buy all the hype paying for bleeding edge technology. Every time you put a new tubeless tire on a car or your moto, you install a new valve stem. Every time you install a new tube, you install a new valve stem. For the ignorant, there's your sign. Install new valve stems with every new tire.

Its kind of late and I have put back a few for the fourth, but I believe his problem was not having the proper fitting valve stems, not that they wore out. For the ignorant, see the diagram somewhere above. :drunk:

hmm that's funny, i havent spent a dime on a tube or tubless supplies since 2006ish. A quart of stans goes a long way. I dont use tubless tires, just run of the mill kenda small block 8's. I'm pretty hard on them and generally have no issues. I also run a ghetto home made tubless setup so all it cost me initially was few bucks for some strapping tape, and the bottle of stans. The valve stems i use are cut out of old tubes that had holes in them. I've used the same stems forever.
If i have ever burped them, it was only in situations that would deffinately snakebite a tube, and they only lose a little air when they burp so you can still ride it.
I also lost a crapload of weight when i went to tubless, and rotating weight is major.
It doesnt sound like you have much experience with it, you're just dwelling on the negative stuff you've read from people who probably didnt set it up properly.

Is there any way to add Stans fluid through a Mavic stem? I have been using a syringe set up for removable stems for years and it is so convenient to top it off every few months. Now with new Mavic Crossroc wheels, no such luck?
